IUCN Red Data Book Status
Categories for Butterflies

1. Extinct

Taxa not seen in nature during the last 50 years

2. Endangered

Taxa in danger of extinction because survival is unlikely if current causal factors continue to operate unchecked. Includes taxa that may already be extinct but have been seen within the last 50 years as well as those that are in immediate danger.

3. Vulnerable

Taxa thought likely to become endangered in the near future if current causal factors continue to operate.

4. Rare

Taxa at risk due to small world population sizes but that are not currently thought to be “vulnerable” or “endangered.”

5. Indeterminate

Taxa for which there is insufficient data to determine, but are thought to be covered under categories 2 through 4.

6. Secure

Taxa in any of categories 2 through 5 that are now considered to be demonstrably secure because of effective conservation measures.

Note that “threatened” is often used as a general term to describe any individual from categories 2 through 5.

These categories were superceded by a new status category scheme adopted in 1994.
